For the first time in its 25 year history, the Festival of the Sea took place on Southwold's much-loved pier this June.

Thousands of visitors flocked to this weekend of maritime fun, food and festivities in aid of the Fishermen's Mission.

The Festival of the Sea 2009 was a good first step into its new venue, with a wealth of attractions including Adnams food and wine tastings, fishing demonstrations, a Sunday family service, stalls for food and the famous Shirley Bass-y fish car.

The Fishermen's Mission is a national charity that supports fishermen and their families, with supporters including Rick Stein. Entirely charitably funded, this charity launched just up the coast in Gorleston in 1881. And the Festival raised £5,000 profit for them.

The idea behind the Festival of the Sea is to give a flavour of the activities associated with the sea that have given this region such a rich heritage. It aims to unfold the history of the fishing industry with all its blood, sweat and tears and to develop a deeper understanding of our ever-changing coastline.

The Festival is of key importance to the region as it raises hugely necessary funds for the Fishermen's Mission. Today, The Mission is more active than ever working with and financially benefiting thousands of fishermen, old and young, who have spent their lives on the sea.
